Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja came to the rescue of a newborn infant who was found sleeping on a wet mattress in Nairobi’s Kariobangi.
The governor through his Sakaja Foundation learnt about the baby’s situation through neighbors who found the baby left on the wet mattress, hours after being ushered to the world.
Concerned about the baby’s wellbeing, the neighbors contacted Sakaja’s foundation and a local community health promoter.
Subsequently, the Sakaja Foundation team swung into action and offered household shopping, cooking gas, a double-decker bed and a high-density mattress to the family.
Later, the team traced the baby’s mother, one Gladys Atieno who narrated the circumstances that saw her leave the new baby in such a situation.
She came back home only to find that the neighbors had carried the baby with them.

According to her, her predicaments started when her husband abandoned her while pregnant and her two other children.
As such, she had to assume the role of being the family’s sole-breadwinner amid the tough economic conditions.
On the day when the neighbors found the baby on the wet mattress, Atieno said that she left her house to look for money to feed her children and pay rent.
To her disappointment, however, she only managed to raise Ksh50 only and used Ksh10 to buy milk for the baby.

“I gave birth on Wednesday night in the house and since I did not have money, I woke up in the morning to go hustle,” she stated.
“I only raised 50 shillings, which I used to buy the baby milk for 10 shillings,” said Atieno.
The neighbors in collaboration with a community health promoter in the area later took the baby to the Mama Lucy Hospital.
“I was told about a child who was born at night and was sleeping on a wet mattress,” the community health promoter stated.
