Article 230(4)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya empowers the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review and set the remuneration and benefits for the Inspector General (IG), the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Intelligence Service (NIS) chiefs, and other State officers.
The SRC also conducts periodic reviews of salaries for all State Officers.

The current salary and benefits for IG Douglas Kanja, DCI Director Amin Mohammed, and NIS Director Noordin Haji are based on the Third Remuneration and Benefits Review Cycle, which covers the financial years 2021/2022 to 2024/2025.
SRC reviewed and set the remuneration and benefits for implementation in two phases in FY 2023/2024 – 2024/2025.

Salaries IG Kanja, Amin, and Noordin Enjoy
IG Kanja and Noordin Haji earn a gross monthly salary of Ksh 819,844.
This includes a basic salary of Ksh 491,906, a house allowance of Ksh 150,000, an official commuter allowance, and a salary market adjustment of Ksh177,938.

DCI Amin takes home a gross salary of Ksh 684,233 which compises a basic salary of Ksh 410,540, a house allowance of Ksh 100,000, an official commuter allowance, and a salary market adjustment of Ksh 173,693.
At the same time, the three officers are provided with an official car with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc.

Allowances, and Hefty Benefits
An annual medical cover is also provided to them, including for one spouse and up to four children below the age of twenty-five years who are fully dependent on the officer.
The three officers are entitled to several health benefits, including inpatient medical coverage of Ksh 10 million, outpatient coverage of Ksh 300,000, and maternity coverage of Ksh 150,000.
Additionally, they receive dental coverage of Ksh 75,000 and optical coverage of Ksh 75,000.
Kanja, Amin, and Noordin are also granted several other benefits, including group life insurance coverage equivalent to three times their annual pensionable emoluments.
They are further covered under a Group Personal Accident policy valued at three times the annual pensionable emoluments, along with other benefits eligible under the Group Personal Accident cover.
Furthermore, the officers are eligible for a car loan and mortgage benefit.
Kanja and Noordin Haji are entitled to a car loan of up to Ksh 8 million and a mortgage of up to Ksh 35 million.
DCI Amin Mohammed is entitled to a car loan of up to Ksh 6 million and a mortgage of up to Ksh 30 million.

Retirement Benefits
There are two retirement benefit options for State Officers: pension or gratuity.
A State Officer serving or appointed for a fixed term of office shall be paid a service gratuity at the rate of 31 per cent of the annual pensionable emoluments for the term served.
Meanwhile, where a pension scheme is established for State Officers appointed for a fixed term of office, the SRC shall review and set the rate of employer contribution to the scheme, along with any other financial retirement benefits.
A State Officer shall not benefit from both pension and gratuity from the same public body for the same period.
