Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has been given the green light by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for the county’s top seat come the August 9 General Elections.
The Senator was cleared to vie for the gubernatorial seat on Tuesday, June 6 after IEBC reconsidered its earlier decision to bar Kanga’ta from running for the seat on the grounds that his running mate Winnie Mwangi had failed to resign from her current posting within the legal deadline.

IEBC stated that Ms Mwangi failed to resign from office by February 9, in violation of the Elections Act which says that public officers seeking elective positions should resign six months before the election.
Ms Mwangi served as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi before Kanga’ta picked her as his running mate for the Murang’a County gubernatorial bid.
