The Ministry of Education has issued guidelines for Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), outlining how senior school students should engage with their learning.
Under new timetabling and curriculum guidelines, learners in Grades 10 to 12 are set to experience a structured, skill-focused education that equips them with academic knowledge and prepares them for the demands of higher education and the modern workforce.
Structured Days for Senior School Learning
Senior Schools are now implementing a designed timetable that focuses on balance between academics, co-curriculars, and personal development.
Students will report to school at 8:00 a.m., with lessons beginning at 8:20 a.m. and concluding at 3:20 p.m.
Each of the 40 weekly lessons lasts 40 minutes, covering both core and elective subjects.
The daily schedule includes health breaks after every two lessons, a 10-minute morning break, a 30-minute mid-morning break, and a one-hour lunch period.
PE will take 2 hours in a week with other support subjects are carefully slotted into the timetable to ensure learners maintain both mental and physical wellness.

According to the Ministry of Education guidelines, schools must ensure subjects with similar skills or content areas do not follow one another.
This prevents monotony and enhances student engagement.
What Students Study Before University
To qualify for university or college placement, students must complete Grade 12 and earn the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Assessments are split into 30 percent school-based evaluations and 70 percent national exams.
Learners study seven subjects, four core and three electives, drawn from the KICD-approved curriculum:
- Core Subjects (4): English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language, Core or Essential Mathematics (depending on the pathway), and Community Service Learning (CSL).
- Elective Subjects (3): Chosen from one of three pathways — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; or Arts and Sports Science.
Preparing for the Transition
Senior Schools are required to focus on academic preparedness and career readiness.
Schools must teach study skills, digital literacy, and self-management to help students adapt to the more independent learning environment of universities.
Career guidance plays a central role throughout Grades 10 to 12.
Learners are encouraged to explore their interests, understand career pathways, and align their studies with their aspirations.

Schools are advised to use models such as RIASEC for career mapping and host university and industry professionals for career talks.
Financing the Future
Students and parents are guided on how to plan for university expenses and access available funding.
These include loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), government grants, and NG-CDF bursaries.
Those enrolling in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs can also benefit from government tuition subsidies.
Senior Schools are urged to incorporate basic financial literacy lessons to help learners budget, save, and manage personal finances once they enter higher education.
Applying for Admission
Applications to universities and colleges are made through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal, which remains open year-round for TVET applicants.
Students are advised to prepare essential documents such as KCBE results slips, recommendation letters, and certificates of co-curricular participation.
