Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko narrated a moving experience with President William Ruto highlighting his generosity and intervention in a car-related incident.
Celebrating Ruto’s 57th birthday, Sonko took to social media to share the incident, describing President Ruto as “the man with the kindest heart”.
“As we celebrate the 57th birthday of our beloved president, I find it important to reveal to you some throwback history regarding birthday boy. The man with the kindest heart,” he stated.
Sonko was accused of stealing a car. He bought the motor vehicle in question a range rover, Ruto at Ksh8 million.
Kenya’s second President Daniel Moi initially owned the car.
“19 years ago, when I was a nobody in the political arena of this country, I bought a Range Rover registration number KAQ 535W for Ksh8 million from the then minister for Agriculture and Member of Parliament Eldoret North, William Ruto (current president),” he added.

“There was a time when one of Moi’s cars was reported to have been stollen, and the police mistook it for this particular vehicle that I had bought from the birthday boy through a car dealer, Nganga Mundia, who also happened to have formally introduced me to him in 2004,” he added.
Sonko Wife Arrested
“I vividly remember one morning my wife and children were driving to Uchumi Supermarket in Buruburu when they were spotted and stopped by the flying squad team that had mistaken the car with the stolen one that belonged to the retired president.
“Out of panic, my wife sped off, but the flying squad team pursued her, arrested her, and confiscated the car at Buruburu police station,” he added.
Sonko recalled Ruto’s swift action. He instructed Moi’s former Personal Assistant to issue a statement clarifying that the detained car wasn’t Moi’s. This intervention led to the car’s release.
“At this point I sought the intervention of the birthday boy who without hesitation instructed the former PA to mzee Moi to do a statement denying the reports that the vehicle that was detained at Buruburu Police Station was not the one stolen from mzee Moi,” Sonko narrated.

However, the incident left its mark, and Sonko sought to change the car’s license plate. The registrar of motor vehicles initially rejected the request. He wanted a letter of no objection from the registered owner, Ruto. Sonko personally visited Ruto at his office, despite his lack of political standing at the time.
Ruto, according to Sonko, readily welcomed him and granted the request within minutes, issuing a letter addressed to the registrar. This letter facilitated the change of license plate.
