The Standard Group PLC has issued a warning to the public and radio stations in Kenya regarding broadcasting of the English Premier League (EPL) matches for the 2024/25 season.
In a notice on Monday, August 26, the media house announced that it retains the exclusive radio broadcast rights of live commentaries EPL matches.
“The Standard Group is pleased to announce that we retain the exclusive radio broadcast rights for the English Premier League in the territory of Kenya, for the 2024/2025 season,” the notice read in parts.
SG explains that the licenses bars other radio stations in Kenya from broadcasting the matches adding that the media house will take legal action against radio stations which transmits these matches.
“This exclusive license means that no other radio broadcaster is authorized to transmit or broadcast EPL matches within the territory of Kenya. Any authorized broadcasting or attempts to transmit these matches on radio will constitute a violation our exclusive rights and will be subject to legal action,” SG said.
The media house encouraged all fans of the EPL to tune in to its stations namely Radio Maisha, Spice FM and Berur FM, for the most comprehensive and exclusive coverage of the matches throughout the season.
EPL Exclusive Broadcasting Right
The exclusive right consists of intricate licensing agreements that enable broadcasting companies to present EPL matches to eager fans worldwide.
It gives a specific broadcasting company the sole authority to show and distribute EPL matches within a particular region or market.
This exclusivity bars other broadcasters from airing the same matches in the designated area, thus preserving the value of the acquired broadcasting rights.

How it Works
Premier League allows television and radio based in the United Kingdom (UK) and foreign broadcasters to air the EPL matches at a fee.
In the UK, 200 of the 380 matches during the Premier League season are shown on TV. The games are split into seven packages which the broadcasters like Sky, BT and Amazon can bid for.

PL also allows foreign media house to air some of the matches, but this involves a complicated process since the broadcasters must be identified from different continents and countries.
The money paid by broadcasters is divided between the 20 Premier League clubs as follows: 50 per cent is divided equally between the clubs, 25 per cent is awarded on a merit basis, determined by final league positions, and 25 per cent is distributed as a facilities fee for televised matches.
