The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) fired 129 teachers and interdicted 46 of them for asking for transfer from the Northeastern region.
One of the affected teachers on Wednesday October 11 narrated how TSC served them with interdiction letters instead of transfers, while others were removed from the register.
“To date instead of being given transfers teachers are being interdicted so far we have 129 teachers have been exited from the TSC system while 46 have been interdicted,” the teacher said.
In a letter by the commission, those interdicted were asked to immediately leave their stations and to provide evidence for the reason they needed the transfer.
“The letter says that we stay away from the working stations,” he added.

The teachers camped at the TSC headquarters in Upper Hill for two weeks seeking transfers from Wajir, Garissa and Mandera Counties.
Consequently, the parliamentary committee on education asked the commission not to interdict the tutors.
Julius Melly, the Parliamentary Education Committee chairman had said that TSC should only transfer teachers and not interdict them.
“Those teachers should not be interdicted, those teachers need to be paid their salaries and two we are calling on the local leaders to mop up any local teacher to be recruited,” he said.
However, in response to the teachers request, the TSC said it cannot transfer the teachers due to a lack of suitable replacements.

The TSC sent affected teachers regret letters that they had to report to their workstations by September 9 or face disciplinary action.
“Your request for transfer out of North-Eastern region is acknowledged by TSC. However, due to the lack of a suitable replacement, your request is hereby declined,” TSC said.
“You are therefore directed to report to your workstation by September 7, 2023, failure to which disciplinary action shall be preferred against you.”
