The Teachers Service Commision (TSC) has removed 73 teachers from the Register of Teachers following disciplinary processes.
In a gazette notice published on Friday, September 22, the commission noted that 63 of the teachers were employed on permanent and pensionable terms while 10 of the teachers were employed under the Board of Management (BOM).
Additionally, TSC noted that the teachers, whose names and TSC numbers were indicated in the notice, would not be reinstated unless directed by the commission.
Moreover, the notice detailed that the teachers were removed from their working stations on August 10, 2023.
“It is drawn to our attention that the persons whose names appear in the above schedule and to the general public the provisions of section 30(4) and (5) and section 23 (2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act,” the notice read in part.
Conditions After Deregistration of Teachers
The commission clarified that after deregistration, the teachers would not be reinstated unless directed by TSC.
“Where the name of any teacher is removed from the registrar under this Act, such name shall not be reinstated except by direction of the commission,” added the notice.
At the same time, the commission noted that teachers whose names have been removed from the registrar of teachers will no longer be a teacher effective from the day of the removal.
Moreover, a teacher who is deregistered is not allowed to engage in the teaching service unless the person is registered again as a teacher under the Teachers Service Commission Act.

Fines, Penalties and Jail Terms for Hiring Deregistered Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission further stated that if any of the teachers proceeded to assist in teaching in any school or became a teacher, they will be liable to a fine of not less than ksh100,000, or a jail term not exceeding two years.
Additionally, anyone who allows or employs deregistered teachers in any school is guilty of an offence liable to a fine of not less than ksh100,000, or an imprisonment of not more than two years or both.

What Next for Deregistered Teachers
The affected teachers can choose to apply for reinstatement at the discretion of the commission.
An application may only be made after the expiry of eighteen months from the date of removal of the name from the register.
