Laikipia University students staged protests along the Nakuru–Nyahururu Highway on Saturday, March 21, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The students demanded urgent action and accountability over what they described as failing campus emergency and health services.
The demonstrations followed the death of first-year media student Hillary Vumilu, who was reportedly struck by a falling rock at Subukia Viewpoint Waterfalls during a hiking trip.

According to reports, the students accused the university administration of delaying the release of an ambulance, citing the public holiday as the reason services were unavailable.
They added that the incident occurred just four kilometers from the Laikipia University.
Videos circulating online reportedly showed the flowing water turning red as the students desperately tried to rescue Hillary after the accident.

Two KU Students and a Driver Killed in Kibwezi Road Crash
In another incident affecting students, on Friday, March 20, 2026, two Kenyatta University students and a bus driver died after the bus they were traveling in lost control in Kibwezi along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
According to Chyullu Assistant County Commissioner William Tonui, the students had hired a 33-seater matatu from Nairobi for a private trip to Mombasa.
The vehicle lost control, veered off the road near Machinery Township, rolled several times, and left three dead and six others injured.
“The accident was self-involving. The vehicle rolled multiple times at the machinery area, with three casualties reported at the scene,” said Tonui.
