A post-mortem examination conducted on the body of youth mobiliser and Technical University of Kenya student Cecil Ouma has confirmed that he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The autopsy, conducted by two pathologists representing both the government and the family, established that Ouma sustained a gunshot injury that caused massive internal bleeding.

The shooting, which occurred on June 30 along Nairobi’s Park Road shortly after a government youth empowerment event in Kariokor, has sparked public outrage and intensified calls for accountability.

“We have done the post-mortem as two pathologists, one representing the government and the other representing the family. And the conclusion is that he died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the left side of the chest, and there was a lot of bleeding. Inside the chest, there was internal bleeding, and that was a cause of death. We were able to retrieve the bullet handle, which we have handed over for ballistic investigation to the IPOA group,” said the pathologist.

Speaking after the examination, the pathologists confirmed that Ouma died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the left side of the chest, which led to extensive internal bleeding.

According to the pathologist, the bullet first entered through Ouma’s left forearm near the elbow before traveling into the chest cavity. The projectile punctured the lungs, passed through and fractured the spine, and eventually became lodged behind the chest near the spinal region.

The medical team further confirmed that they successfully retrieved the bullet during the post-mortem examination. The projectile has since been handed over to investigators for further investigation.

“We have explained that this was a gunshot wound to the chest with massive internal bleeding to the chest. Specimens, including the bullets, have been found, retrieved, along the spine, behind the spine, and it has been submitted for ballistic investigations. Of course, other specimens have been taken so as to complete fully the investigations as of now. We hand over the investigative process to the authorities so as to complete the whole story,” added the pathologist.
