Motorists along the Thika Superhighway were caught up in a traffic snarl-up after a billboard pole fell on the road at the entrance to Thika Town on Friday, November 8, 2024.
The incident caused traffic congestion along the busy highway leaving motorists stranded.
Earlier, a bus carrying passengers overturned on Thika Road near the GSU headquarters, resulting in multiple injuries and a traffic jam.
The accident occurred when a public service vehicle (PSV) collided with a blue Honda Fit, causing the PSV to roll onto its side and inflicting severe damage on the Honda’s passenger side.
Traffic snarl-up witnessed along Thika Road
Videos shared from the scene showed the overturned bus lying in the middle of the road, while on lookers and good samaritans quickly rushed to assist passengers trapped inside.
Some passengers were seen climbing out through the windows with the help of bystanders, as emergency responders assessed injuries.

Another lady was also spotted lying on top of the side of the bus as she was unable to move.
At the accident scene, there was also the presence of traffic police officers together with their colleagues from the GSU department, who were overseeing and coordinating the evacuation and rescue efforts.
Although there were no fatalities, several people were quickly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

NTSA data on number of road accidents
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents had claimed 1,189 lives as of April 1, 2024, which is 60 more than the same period in 2023.
Pedestrians account for the highest number of fatalities, with 436 deaths in 2024 compared to 374 in 2023. Additionally, 3,316 people were seriously injured, and 2,693 sustained minor injuries as of April 1, 2024.

Motorcycles and commercial vehicles are the leading causes of these fatalities. Outering Road in Nairobi is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Kenya, along with Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, Thika Superhighway, Eastern Bypass, Jogoo Road, and Kangundo Road.
The main causes of road accidents include speeding, overloading, drunk driving, fatigue, and poor road infrastructure.
