South Africa’s incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa faces the prospect of his ruling party’s worst election result ever.
For months, polls have shown the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party losing its majority for the first time in 30 years.
Ramaphosa was ANC’s lead negotiator during talks that led to a peaceful end to apartheid, enabling Nelson Mandela to become South Africa’s first Black president after the historic all-race vote in 1994.
However, as millions of South Africans prepare to vote in what is expected to be the most pivotal general election since the end of apartheid, fake news is on the rise.
For instance, a video clip has been making rounds on social media falsely depicting Ramaphosa as the greatest condom salesman in the world.
A fact check done by The Kenya Times reveals that Ramaphosa has never been a condom seller, either in South Africa or globally but he is a multimillionaire businessman who owns South Africa’s McDonalds franchise.
After a reverse search, The Kenya Times found that the video clip, shared online, dates back to September 2016 when Ramaphosa was the Deputy President of South Africa.

Ramaphosa Unveils New Condom Brand
In the clip, Ramaphosa was informing South Africa’s Members of Parliament that the Ministry of health has launched a new brand of condom.
Ramaphosa, who was proudly boasting about the government’s free flavored condoms brought along the new Max condoms to demonstrate.
He is seen holding two wrappers containing the new Max condoms while confidently assuring the MPs that the launch was in response to complaints from a number of people concerning the old government-issued Choice condoms.
“They were saying that the other condom that had been introduced by the government did not smell so well, and it made a noise whenever it was used,” he said.

He said the government had fixed and improved the formula, by bringing in more flavors.
“Now, through scientific development, we were able to develop a new condom, which is called Max. The Max is for maximum pleasure, protection, and it does not make noise at all,” he added.
Ramaphosa while unveiling the government-issued condom in the country’s parliament encouraged the MPs to try the new condoms for maximum pleasure and noise-free.
The rebranding was informed by the decrease in condom use, as revealed by the 2012 SA National HIV Prevalence Incidence and Behavior Survey.
Max replaced the over 10-year-old free public sector “Choice” brand.
