The United Kingdom has issued updated guidance for its citizens and dual nationals travelling from other countries. In its latest travel advisory, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) outlines fresh requirements and clarifications for Britons who hold citizenship in another country, including Kenya, as well as those entering or returning to the UK.
The new advisory is expected to affect thousands of Kenyan British dual nationals who travel frequently between the two countries, as well as Kenyans seeking to acquire British citizenship or navigate the emerging Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system.
According to the advisory, the UK allows dual citizenship, meaning individuals may hold British nationality alongside that of another country. However, the FCDO warns that many countries apply their own rules on dual nationality, and travellers are urged to check Kenya’s legal provisions before travelling.
FCDO states that British dual nationals cannot receive diplomatic assistance from the UK while they are in the country of their other citizenship. This means that for Kenyans who also hold British nationality, the UK government is limited in how it can intervene on their behalf in cases of arrest, disputes, or emergencies while in Kenya.
The advisory further outlines stricter rules for travelling to the UK. Dual nationals must use either a valid UK or Irish passport, or any other valid passport accompanied by a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode.

FCDO notes that dual citizens cannot obtain an ETA, a system being rolled out ahead of full implementation in 2026. However, the guidance provides that travelers who hold another nationality eligible for ETA may continue using that passport to enter the UK until 25 February 2026, even without a certificate of entitlement.
The update also offers clarity on citizenship questions relating to marriage and children, noting that marrying a British citizen does not automatically grant British nationality, and that some countries may automatically pass citizenship to children born abroad.
Updated UK travel & entry requirements for citizens travelling to Kenya
Further, the FCDO update includes detailed entry and travel requirements for British citizens heading to Kenya.
To enter Kenya, British passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and contain at least two blank pages. Airlines and travel providers may also conduct checks, and passengers may be denied entry if they attempt to travel with invalid documents or a passport previously reported as lost or stolen.
The advisory reiterates that dual nationals must carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement when returning to the UK.
This requirement is non-negotiable, as dual citizens cannot rely on an ETA or alternative documentation to re-enter the country. In addition, travellers to Kenya must apply online for an ETA before departure. Local authorities recommend submitting applications at least two weeks in advance.

Those who already hold a valid Kenyan visa may continue using it until it expires, but all new arrivals must comply with the updated ETA system. The update also offers guidance for those needing a certificate of entitlement, a document placed inside a passport to prove the holder has the right of abode in the UK.
Applicants must obtain a new certificate each time their passport is renewed. Applications can be made from inside or outside the UK, with a fee of £589 regardless of location.
Processing times vary, with up to 8 weeks for applications made from within the UK, and around 3 weeks for those submitted from abroad following an appointment at a visa application centre. Successful applicants receive their certificate along with the official decision letter.
Those in the UK who need help completing the online form, such as individuals without internet access or those not confident using digital devices, can receive assistance. However, the service does not provide immigration advice.
