The University of Nairobi (UoN) has fallen out of the top 1,000 universities globally in the newly released QS World University Rankings 2026. The institution is now positioned in the 1,001–1,200 range, down from the 901–950 bracket last year.
This drop is part of a broader trend affecting universities in sub-Saharan Africa, attributed to regional challenges and declining global competitiveness in higher education.
Kenya’s sole representative, the University of Nairobi, drops
According to the QS World Rankings, the assessment covers over 1,500 universities across 106 countries. Of the 19 sub-Saharan African universities listed, only three improved in ranking, all from South Africa.

“With only three of the 19 institutions in sub-Saharan Africa improving their rankings, universities need to ensure they keep up with advancements in higher education worldwide,” said Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President.
UoN now shares the same tier as Makerere University in Uganda and the University of Lagos in Nigeria, reflecting increased competition from institutions across the continent.
Top 10 world best universities
The rankings are based on various indicators, including institutional reputation, research output, international engagement, graduate employment, and sustainability.
The top 10 universities in the world in the 2026 edition are:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA
- Imperial College London, UK
- Stanford University, USA
- University of Oxford, UK
- Harvard University, USA
- University of Cambridge, UK
- ETH Zurich, Switzerland
- National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore
- University College London (UCL), UK
- California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA
UON’s strength
Despite its general decline, UoN remains strong in certain areas. It scored 95.6 and ranked 72nd globally in the ‘Employment Outcomes’ category.
This metric assesses how well graduates perform in the job market.

“This indicates significant room for improvement in areas such as environmental research, energy use, and sustainable institutional practices,” QS noted.
However, UoN’s employability ranking has dropped five places since last year, signalling growing pressure on the university to align with job market demands.
UoN remains best in subject-specific rankings
In the subject-specific rankings, UoN remains in the 201–250 range, performing relatively well in development studies, agriculture, and education.
These fields remain key strengths despite the overall institutional ranking decline.

In the sustainability category, which evaluates institutions on environmental and social impact as well as governance, UoN ranked in the 1081–1100 bracket.
“While the institution faces challenges in broader metrics such as research output and international engagement, it continues to perform well in certain academic disciplines,” the QS report highlighted.
