UoN Breaks Silence Over 200 Students Missing Graduation List One Day to Ceremony

UPDATE: The University of Nairobi (UoN) has responded to allegations of removing students from graduation lists without proper reasons.

However, the office of the Vice Chancellor (VC) has stated that no qualified student who has been cleared and approved by the Senate has been excluded from the graduation.

Additionally, a statement from the institution has indicated that degrees are conferred only after fulfilling program requirements and Senate approval.

Therefore, the University is unaware of any qualified students being unjustly excluded.

“Earlier in October 2024, the University issued a circular to notify students of the graduation process and requirements. This was followed by subsequent reminders via email and social media. All eligible candidates were urged to resolve any outstanding fee balances, including graduation fees, to ensure their participation.

“We would like to confirm that 45 students submitted late appeals after the established deadline. In response, a special Senate meeting was convened, during which 30 of these appeals were approved for graduation,” the statement read in part.

Tensions are running high at the University of Nairobi (UoN) as over 200 students have been removed from the graduation list.

According to the students who were studying at the Lower Kabete Campus, they learnt that they were not on the list days before the big day.

Consequently, some of the students on Thursday, December 12, stormed the administration offices to demand answers.

In videos shared online, the students are seen scrambling in the institution corridors, attempting to force their way into an office.

The graduation has been scheduled for Friday, December 13.

Many of the students have said that the exclusion was unjust and poorly communicated, with some accusing university management of incompetence.

The affected students expressed frustration at the lack of transparency surrounding the decision.

“We received no explanations or prior warnings about issues with our academic status,” one student lamented.

Sources within the university indicated that discrepancies in course credits, missing marks, and unresolved administrative matters are the root causes of the mass exclusions.

However, the university has yet to release an official statement clarifying the situation, leaving students and parents confused.

VC on Graduation

UoN Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson on November 11, said that the university would graduate 5,000 students who have completed their academic requirements during the 72nd graduation ceremony.

Therefore, she asked graduands to clear in good time and avoid last-minute pressure.

“I urge the prospective graduands to clear in good time to avoid last minute pressure and for the other for the staff members to smoothly facilitate the process,” she said.

“We shall be hosting very high-level Partners from across the globe and I therefore urge all of us to prepare and to stay focused and to watch this space for more details.”
