The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday, October 11, arrested an ICT officer working at the Cooperative University of Kenya for allegedly demanding a bribe from a student set to graduate in December 2024.
In a statement, the Commission said the university staff member allegedly demanded a bribe of Ksh50,000 from the student to alter their grades in the university portal.
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested an ICT officer working at the Cooperative University of Kenya who demanded a bribe of Ksh50,000 from a student due for graduation in December 2024 in order to correct an anomaly in the student’s examination results as captured in the university portal,” part of the statement read.
The EACC revealed that the complainant reportedly attained a degree classification of Second-Class Honours Upper Division which was mysteriously changed in the portal to Second Class Honours Lower Division.
Cooperative University staff arrested by EACC
When she went to inquire from the ICT Department about the problem, she was told by the suspect that the error could only be rectified if she parted with Ksh50,000 as ‘tea’ for the suspect.
According to the Authority, the lady was unable to raise the amount and decided to report the matter to them which upon verification of the allegations mounted an operation and arrested the suspect within the University compound after he had received Ksh30,000 being the initial part of the demanded amount.

Upon the arrest on Friday evening, the authority escorted the suspect to the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and later booked at Kilimani Police Station.
EACC arrests man masquerading as their official
The university staff arrest comes weeks after the EACC arrested an individual who had been masquerading as their employee following investigations into numerous complaints from extortion victims.
“In that fake capacity, Kennedy Ochieng Agutu has reportedly extorted millions of shillings from many victims, including senior state officials, pretending to be carrying out corruption investigations implicating them, which he promises to sort out,” the statement read in part.

It is reported that the individual had been defrauding Kenyans while posing as the Commission’s Assistant Director of Intelligence Operations.
Agutu was arrested in South C while in hiding and escorted to the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed.
