Pauline Kalonzo, popularly known as Mama Pauline, is the wife of former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.
Despite marrying one of Kenya’s most prominent political figures, she has largely stayed out of the public spotlight.
Before her husband’s political career made their family widely known, Pauline had pursued her education and built a career in banking. She also supported charitable activities through the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation.
Her relationship with Kalonzo dates back to their school days in the early 1970s; the later married in 1985 and have remained together through decades of political life and personal challenges.

Kalonzo has shared details about their first meeting, which took place in 1972 during a Christian fellowship conference organised by the Kenya Students Christian Fellowship at Alliance Girls High School.
At the time, Kalonzo was a Form Five student at Meru School, while Pauline was in Form Two at Mlango Girls School in Kitui.

In an interview in April 2025, he described Pauline as beautiful, tall and smart, recalling that she was also involved in Christian activities at her school.
Their friendship continued after the conference, with Pauline later visiting Kalonzo while he was studying at the University of Nairobi.
She was then working at the Ministry of Labour under the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). She later travelled to India to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree, while Kalonzo secured a scholarship to study in Cyprus.
In his autobiography, Against All Odds, Kalonzo recalled that Pauline was focused on her education and career and was not ready to marry when he first raised the idea. Her decision to pursue further studies delayed their wedding as both continued with their plans.

Kalonzo disclosed that he wanted to marry her earlier, but she was focused on her career and further education. Their relationship continued as Pauline went to India and Kalonzo travelled to Cyprus to study.

The foundation focuses on education, healthcare, poverty reduction, empowerment, peace and community development. Its education programme includes bursaries for learners in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
Kalonzo has previously credited his wife for dedicating her time, effort and family resources to supporting the foundation’s work and helping needy people.
Pauline Kalonzo’s Illness and Life Away from Politics
Pauline’s public appearances became less frequent after she developed a prolonged illness.
In January 2022, Kalonzo said his wife was stable and recuperating in hospital. He also said he missed her presence during political engagements, describing her as a mobiliser who had previously accompanied him.
In an April 2025 interview, Kalonzo said he had considered leaving politics to spend more time caring for her.
“Quite frankly, with an unwell wife, it has occurred to me several times that I could just quit politics and take care of her,” he said.
He added that Pauline would not agree with such a decision, describing her as a “vision carrier” who understood their journey and what they hoped to achieve.
Kalonzo also spoke about the support she had received from friends and religious leaders, saying he continued to pray for her recovery.
The illness has kept Pauline away from many public engagements.
At their daughter Damarie Saada Kalonzo’s wedding in December 2024, she attended a separate ceremony at their home because she could not travel to Naivasha for the main event.
