There was drama at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) whisked away a patient just before undergoing surgery.
The family members and friends of the middle-aged protested at the health facility on January 24, 2024, after the DCI officers took him away while he awaited a procedure to remove a bullet lodged in his body.
According to a report, Kirato narrowly escaped death on January 20 after being shot by an alleged police officer.
The man reportedly engaged in scuffle with the alleged officer, prompting him to fatally shoot the man under unclear circumstances.
However, the reason behind the Wednesday arrest remained unclear, his family’s effort to block the officers from taking him away proving futile.
Following the move by the detectives, Kirato’s friends and family protested at the health facility faulting the investigators for the unfortunate move.
The mob from Dandora raised questions on the inhumane treatment by which the detectives picked the man from the hospital before the bullet stuck in his body was removed.
Family questions detectives
Speaking at the health facility, relatives questioned why the detectives could not have waited for the man to undergo surgery before apprehending him.
“Even if he is in the wrong, they should have waited for him to be treated before the arrest. We don’t have a problem with him being arrested because if he is liable for wrongdoing, we won’t oppose his prosecution.
But they should have waited for him to be treated,” a relative lamented.

Kirato had been admitted to the facility after the shooting incident in which the alleged officer opened fire fatally injuring him.
His family also complained of delay and postponement of his surgery bookings by the hospital’s management since he was admitted.
They complained that it was unfair and inhumane for the detectives to pick Kiraitu up before he received treatment.
However, despite the cries, the detectives went on to whisk the man away in full glare of cameras before the bullet could be extracted with no clear explanations about the arrest.
Inhumane treatment sparks uproar
In a similar incident, Kenyans also questioned the inhumane treatment of the driver of an ill-fated bus involved in a tragic road accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
The presentation of the driver before court by police officers sparked jitters among a section of Kenyans as they came to call out the inhumane treatment from the officers.
In a video footage seen by The Kenya Times, Clement Kiarie was presented at the Molo Law Courts on Thursday, January 11 to face charges following the tragic accident that left 15 people dead and scores injured.

However, the driver was seen to be still in a critical health condition as he was being led to the law courts.
After disembarking from the vehicle, the driver who seemed to be in pain as he struggled to walk, was escorted to the court chambers by national police officers.
Tony Betin, a concerned social media user noted, “I understand that’s how the systems works but the guy is not stable at the moment.”
On the other hand, another user reacted to the video questioning why the driver was not given enough time to nurse his injuries.
