Joining the National Police Service (NPS) is open to eligible Kenyans who meet the education, age, physical, medical, and integrity requirements set by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

For most young Kenyans seeking to join the police, recruitment as a police constable is the main entry point.
Requirements to Join the National Police Service
The latest published NPSC advertisement for police constables sets out the following minimum requirements:
- Must be a Kenyan citizen.
- Must have a valid Kenyan National Identity Card.
- Must be between 18 and 28 years old.
- Must have a minimum KCSE mean grade of D+.
- Must have at least D+ in either English or Kiswahili.
- Must be physically and medically fit.
- Must meet the prescribed minimum height of 5 feet 8 inches for men and 5 feet 3 inches for women.
- Must have no criminal record or pending criminal charges.

Female applicants must also not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or during the entire training period. The NPSC has also encouraged eligible National Youth Service (NYS) graduates to apply.
The requirements vary depending on the entry category. For instance, the 2025 recruitment regulations set the maximum age at 28 years for constable applicants and 30 years for cadet applicants.
How to Apply for Police Recruitment
The NPSC conducts police recruitment through an official process.
Applicants for police constable positions must complete the prescribed application form. The NPSC has previously made the forms available through its website, the National Police Service, and related government platforms, as well as Huduma Centers.
Applicants may also use the official online recruitment system when it is open for applications.
During recruitment, applicants must appear at their designated recruitment centers with originals and copies of the required documents.
These include:
- Academic certificates and testimonials
- Kenyan National Identity Card
- Birth certificate
- NYS discharge certificate, where applicable
The NPSC states that original documents are returned to applicants before they leave the recruitment centre.
Applicants should also be aware that NPS recruitment is free, and NPSC warns against paying individuals who claim they can influence or secure recruitment.
What Happens During the Recruitment Process?
Meeting the basic requirements does not automatically guarantee selection.
Under the 2025 recruitment regulations, candidates may face interviews, assessments, examinations, and vetting processes determined by the Commission.
The recruitment framework is intended to ensure that candidates are assessed on the required qualifications and suitability for service.

The NPSC has also introduced an automated recruitment system to reduce human contact during stages of the recruitment process that were previously vulnerable to malpractice, including shortlisting, examination of academic documents, and medical examinations.
Successful police constable applicants are selected for training at designated National Police Service training institutions.
The NPSC recruitment process allows successful candidates to proceed to designated training colleges after recruitment and selection.
Training forms part of the preparation for police duties and is separate from the recruitment exercise itself.

How Much Does a Police Constable Earn?
The NPSC announced in September 2024 that the basic salary for a police constable at the entry level increased from KSh21,645 to KSh25,645 per month following salary adjustments.
The figure refers to basic salary, and a police officer’s overall remuneration may also include applicable allowances and other benefits depending on the officer’s circumstances and terms of service.
As officers progress through the ranks and salary structures, their basic pay changes accordingly.
