Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s husband, veteran lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo, has graduated with a PhD from the University of Nairobi during the institution’s 74th graduation ceremony held on Thursday, December 12, 2025, at the Chancellor’s Court.

In a statement released earlier by the University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Education, the institution congratulated Waiganjo for attaining the academic milestone, noting the dedication required to balance his legal career and public responsibilities.

“Congratulations to Lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo, the First Gentleman of Kirinyaga County, on your graduation @uonbi ceremony! Balancing high-level legal practice and supporting Governor @AnneWaiguru is no small feat. Well done, Wakili!” the faculty stated.

Waiganjo was among four scholars who received doctoral degrees during the ceremony. Under the Faculty of Law, PhDs were awarded to Okech Owiti Maurice and Waiganjo Kamotho. At the same time, Beth Akinyi Ayoo and Selelah Atieno Okoth graduated with Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Environmental Policy.

Kamotho Waiganjo Profile

Waiganjo is a seasoned Kenyan lawyer with extensive experience in law, governance, and public finance.

He previously served in the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC), where he played a key role in overseeing constitutional reforms and ensuring the effective rollout of the 2010 Constitution.

He has also worked widely as a public finance consultant, advising several institutions, including the Council of Governors, on devolution and governance matters.

His career in private practice includes serving as a senior partner at Kamotho Maiyo & Mbatia Advocates, where he headed the commercial and conveyancing department.

Waiganjo has been a columnist for The Standard since 2009, writing on legal and political issues.

During his legal career, he has also handled high-profile cases, including serving on the legal team that successfully challenged the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

In 2020, he led the legal team that defended his wife, Governor Waiguru, during her impeachment hearing before the Senate Select Committee.

Academic Background
Kamotho Waiganjo holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Nairobi, followed by a Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Trade Law.

In addition to his law academic qualifications, Waiganjo has broadened his expertise internationally by obtaining a Certificate in Public Finance and Decentralisation from Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy in 2015.
