The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued an alert to residents of select areas across the country expecting heavy rains for a period of one week.
In a statement on July 8, Kenya Met noted that heavy rains are expected from Tuesday July 9 up to July 15, 2024.
“Rainfall is expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Coast,” said the weatherman.
The met department noted that the rest of the country is likely to be generally dry.
Counties in Rift valley, Western Kenya and Lake Victoria Basin expected to experience heavy showers include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo-Marakwet.
Others are Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties.
Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi Counties will also be expecting similar weather.
Further, the weatherman said intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are expected over some parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley.

Kenya Met Issus 7-Day Weather Forecast
In the forecast, night-time temperatures may drop below 10°C in some parts of the Central Highlands, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands.
These areas include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties,
Likewise, high daytime temperatures above 30°C will be experienced in some parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.
Kenya Met also noted that strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are expected over some parts of the Coast and North-eastern Kenya.

The weatherman had earlier advised Kenyans to take note of increased rainfall intensity on Monday, July 8, 2024, so as to stay safe and plan accordingly.
Furthermore, met department noted that it is not unusual for the country to experience rain in July.
It mentioned that this occurs when cold air from central and eastern regions, including Nairobi, interacts with warm moist air from the west.
“The warm air rises over the cold air, leading to heavy advective rains. As we approach August and early September, this interaction can cause hailstorms, which are often mistaken for snow. This phenomenon is similar to the formation of a warm front,” the weatherman said.
