Chaos erupted in Kigumo, Muranga County after an angry mob stormed Gachocho Police Station, forcing officers to flee.
The residents stormed the station in search of a murder suspect who had been arrested on Wednesday, July 10, and was in custody of the police.
They pelted stones at Gachocho Police Station, engaging them in a six-hour chase around the area. Also, they closed down nearby roads to stop motorists plying the area.
However, the officers ran out of teargas canisters, forcing them to yield to the demands of the mob. They stormed into the station, went into the cells and dragged-out Richard Maina, the suspect before proceeding to lynch Richard Maina within the compound of the police station. Several police officers were hurt in the melee.

Speaking to the press, the residents said that Richard Maina was suspected of killing his brother after an argument over an unknown matter.
Another brother, Kibugu, who is suspected to have helped in the execution of the crime is on the run.
According to Kibugu’s wife, the two brothers attacked their sibling with a hoe and a huge log, hitting him and leaving him for the dead.
“They came with a huge log and the other carried a jembe. They hit him with the jembe first and when he fell down, they hit him on the head with the log.
“When I attempted to call for help, they threatened me too. I had to run and hide in the kitchen,” she narrated.
At the same time, the mob blamed the police officers in the area for failing to take such matters seriously forcing them to take matters into their own hands.

Killer Police Officer Arrested after Residents Storm police Station
In a separate incident in May 2024, residents stormed Kirinyaga police station to demand the arrest of a police officer who was accuse of killing a 19-year-old.
The residents angrily accompanied the deceased’s family led by his aunt Sicily Wangu to demand answers over the killing of their Kin.
Additionally, they explained that the student was playing pool at Kiandai shopping center when police officers arrived, and the shooting incident occurred.
Also, the deceased grandmother, Jane Muthoni questioned why the officers took Derrick’s body to the mortuary without informing the family first.
