The Head of the Palestinian Mission to the United Kingdom has welcomed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s suggested imminent recognition of Palestine as a state, a move announced just days after French President Emmanuel Macron made a similar declaration.
In a statement dated Tuesday, July 30, 2025, Husam Zomlot said the UK’s recognition represents a significant and long-overdue step toward redressing a historic injustice and affirming the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and sovereign statehood.
“We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement that the UK will recognize the State of Palestine in September. This marks a significant and overdue step toward redressing a historic injustice and affirming the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and sovereign statehood,” the statement read in part.

The Palestinian government also welcomed Starmer’s announcement of a renewed effort to deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid to Gaza, which it claims has been obstructed by Israel’s ongoing blockade.
The blockade, Palestinians allege, forms part of a 22-month-long campaign of deliberate starvation.

Zomlot expressed appreciation for the UK’s intention to collaborate with Palestine and international partners to achieve an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and restore unity between the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza.
“As we have consistently said, we are ready. A viable plan is on the table and enjoys broad international support. There must be no further delay in its implementation, including the urgent reconstruction of Gaza,” he added.
According to Zomlot, the UK’s recognition carries particular historical and moral significance.
It addresses injustices rooted in the colonial-era Balfour Declaration and decades of systematic denial of Palestinian rights.
Palestinian Government Expresses Eagerness to Work with the UK
The Palestinian government also expressed eagerness to work closely with the UK government, Parliament, and the British people to ensure this recognition is swiftly and fully translated into action, starting with formal recognition of the State of Palestine without delay.
Zomlot stressed that recognition must be seen as a step toward upholding universal principles of justice and accountability, ending what Palestinians describe as unlawful occupation, and paving the way for an independent Palestinian state.

He further noted that recognition is not a standalone solution and must be accompanied by the equal application of international law, beginning with an immediate end to the war in Gaza, followed by reconstruction and full accountability for alleged war crimes.
The Palestinian government’s response came just hours after Prime Minister Starmer announced that the UK will recognize Palestine as a state at the upcoming United Nations meeting in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire.
