The United States has warned Ugandan visa holders against travelling to the U.S to give birth.
In a statement dated Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the U.S mission in Uganda stressed that using a visa primarily to give birth in the United States so that a child can obtain U.S. citizenship is not permitted.
“Attention U.S visa holders: Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to ensure your child has U.S. citizenship is not allowed,” read the statement.
U.S Issues Warning to Uganda
According to the U.S. mission, Ugandans who use their visas for this reason will have their visa applications denied by consular officers.
“Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” said the US Mission.
The U.S mission further stated that many Ugandan parents with tourist visas travel to the U.S for childbirth and often rely on government assistance to cover their medical expenses. This situation, they argue, results in costs being passed on to American taxpayers.

The mission warned that these parents may not be eligible for visa renewals in the future.
The statement has sparked public debate online, with mixed reactions. Some users expressed support for the decision, while others disagreed.
Ugandans Responds to the Mission’s Statement
One user, Jacob Dhaafa, commented, “Just review your laws on who qualifies for U.S. citizenship. Everything will be sorted. However, for those who prefer giving birth in the U.S., it shouldn’t be a problem as long as they can afford it. Let the world continue to be a global village.”
Another user, Giramata, asked, “What happens to the children who are already born in America?”

On the other hand, others supported the U.S. mission’s stance.
Mktamba Kigongo stated, “Thank you, Donald Trump. The privilege of accessing quality medical care and education in developed countries is one reason politicians and elites in poor countries neglect building robust infrastructures for health and education. They will now be forced to improve conditions at home.”
Another user, known as Policy, added, “Let’s build our own healthcare systems. Instead of exploiting the resources of other countries, leaders should focus on improving healthcare.”
How to Acquire American Citizenship
U.S. citizenship can be acquired through the following main paths:
- Naturalization: Adults who have had a green card for 3 to 5 years can become citizens if they meet residency, English, and civics requirements, and show good moral character.
- Through Parents: Children can automatically become citizens if they are born abroad to U.S. citizens or if their parents become citizens while they are still minors.
- Military Service: Non-citizens who serve honorably in the U.S. military may qualify for a faster naturalization process.
- Adoption: Foreign-born children adopted by U.S. citizens may gain citizenship under certain conditions.
