Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa has raised concern over low voter registration in the region, noting that 1.4 million eligible voters have yet to register as the ongoing enhanced voter registration exercise nears its conclusion next Tuesday.
Speaking on April 22, 2026, Flora Mworoa also expressed concern about the large number of uncollected national identification cards, estimated at 80,000.
Currently, we have 1.4 million voters in the Nyanza region who are yet to register, and about 80,000 uncollected IDs, as per last week. The number has increased,” said Flora Mworoa.
She further warned that the trend could affect voter participation in the upcoming elections.
Mworoa disclosed that despite the ongoing nationwide voter registration drive, a significant number of eligible voters in Nyanza have not taken part in the exercise.

She urged residents to take advantage of the remaining days before the deadline to ensure they are registered and eligible to vote.

Flora’s statements come shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) raised serious concerns regarding critically low voter registration numbers in Siaya and Homa Bay counties.
IEBC Chief Executive Officer Moses Ledama Sunkuli noted that voter registration in Siaya County stands at just 47% of the target, despite over 1.3 million new voters having been registered nationally.
“We are at 47%, and we have agreed that we want to push this to as high as 70% at least, that is the minimum. I was also in Homa Bay, and the same story is also replicating there. We need to really push that,” said the IEBC CEO.
Sunkuli, who had met with IEBC staff and regional government leadership, emphasized that the commission cannot meet its targets in isolation and called for concerted efforts by the IEBC and local political leaders to mobilize the populace.
He noted that the commission has doubled its efforts, deploying clerks, ICT officers, and voter registration assistants to every ward to ensure the process is as accessible as possible, yet the county continues to underperform.
Additionally, Moses Sunkuli discussed the Uncollected National Identity Cards at registration centers, calling them a major challenge to the voter registration process.
According to Sunkuli, many of these IDs belong to residents currently working in urban centers such as Nairobi, and he urged them to make time to collect their documents and register before the window closes.
