A new anti-terror operations center has been opened in Mombasa to boost the war on terror.
The center was jointly built by the Kenya and British governments with support from the United Nations.
The new modern facility located at the Coast regional police command center cost Sh81 million.
Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) will use the center as a detention point for terror suspects.
The anti-terror center will also house the ATPU headquarters.
Its components include a state-of-the-art service area, an armory, conference and IT rooms and nine holding cells fitted with beds, modern toilets and adequate ventilation.
Speaking when he opened the facility Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said it is necessary for the country to invest in modern anti-terrorist and counter-terrorism efforts.
He noted that terrorism remains an evolving national and international security threat.
“The fear created by terrorism remains constant,” he said.
UK High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriot said the UK has committed to supporting Kenya with Sh1 billion annually to tackle terrorism because Nairobi is London’s premier security partner in East Africa.
She added that the UK is committed to strengthening counter-terrorism operations at the Coast to boost tourism.
