Kenyan man John Kibet Lagat has been missing in Australia for more than 13 years, with his family renewing its appeal for information about his whereabouts, according to The Kenyan Diaspora Media.
According to The Kenyan Diaspora Media, John Kibet traveled to Australia in 2010 to pursue a Diploma in Communication and was living in Sydney when his family lost contact with him about three years later.
His sisters, Nancy Barngetuny and Mary, have appealed to Kenyans in Australia, Lagat’s former friends and classmates, and the Kenyan government to help establish what happened to him, the publication reported.

Kibet was studying and living in Sydney when his friends later informed his family that he had stopped attending school.
The family was also informed that, before his disappearance, John Kibet had developed a habit of lying to people and going missing for periods of time.
However, his relatives initially had no reason to believe that anything serious had happened to him.
Communication eventually stopped completely. More than 13 years later, the family still does not know whether Kibet is alive, where he could be, or what happened to him.

The family’s search has also been affected by the death of their father, who played an important role in helping John Kibet travel to Australia.
According to Mary, their father had worked to make it possible for his son to leave Kenya and pursue his studies abroad in the hope of securing better opportunities. He, however, died without learning what had happened to John Kibet.
Mary said her father was deeply affected by his son’s disappearance and repeatedly sought to know his whereabouts.
“He would say that if he knew he was giving his son a way to go and he wouldn’t see him again, he would have never let him leave the country.”
