Nairobi is set to get an upgrade of a Ksh8 billion smart traffic management system to decongest the capital.
In 2024, the Government of Kenya, through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), signed a contract with Samsung C & T Corporation from South Korea for the construction of the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and Junction Improvement Project.
Speaking during the contract signing, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Davis Chirchir urged the contractor and KURA to quickly begin the project.
“Implement this project with precision so that Kenyans get value for the funds used. I urge you to amortize the cameras and related infrastructure to ensure they serve the country for many years to come. The system you install should allow for smooth feed-in to future technology and additions,” he said.
Details of Ksh8 B Smart City
The project is estimated to cost Ksh8 billion, and the Korea Exim Bank will fund it.
The smart city project will see the installation of intelligent traffic management systems at 25 critical junctions in Nairobi.
These systems will comprise traffic lights, cameras, and sensors that will monitor traffic flow and optimize traffic signals. The project was slated to commence in March 2025 and be completed by February 2027.
As part of the project, the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) building at the former Cabanas facility will be equipped and redeveloped.
Other key components of the project include traffic signals, signal controller, intersection surveillance camera, vehicle enforcement system, and communication network, as well as transfer skills.

Nairobi City Key Junctions
The first phase of the construction will see the expansion and modification of major junctions in the city, including Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, Koinange, Mbagathi Way, Lang’ata Road, and Limuru Road.
Additionally, there will be a traffic violation intelligent detection system at the targeted junctions.

KURA to Begin the Project
KURA Director General Silas Kinoti pledged to ensure the work shall commence as planned.
He explained that the project is overdue mainly due to a technical delay in the bidding process.
“I assure the team of total support from KURA, and we will all work as a team to the completion of this project,” he said.
