Fiona Akoth is the first Kenyan woman to serve as a pilot in the United States Air Force.
As a First Lieutenant, Akoth’s milestone continues to inspire young women in Kenya and around the world to break records that have long been dominated by men.
From a humble upbringing in Kisumu, raised by her grandparents, to the cockpit of US military aircraft, her story shows resilience and determination.
Fiona Akoth’s Early Life and Education
Akoth was born and raised in Kisumu, where she spent her early childhood under the care of her grandparents.
At the age of 13, she relocated to the United States to reunite with her mother, who was attending college in Texas.
This was the most challenging experience of her life, as she had to leave a place she was familiar with and friends she had known for years.
“I had to leave a familiar country with a familiar group of friends when I was just becoming a teenager looking for a solid foundation, and that was challenging,” said Akoth
Back in Kenya, she had developed a passion for aviation and wanted to be a pilot, and her grandfather encouraged her never to give up on her dream.
With a passion for aviation, she joined the United States Air Force Academy in June 2011, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, completing it in June 2015.
Akoth later joined Troy University in 2020 to pursue a Master of Science in International Relations and Global Studies, which she completed in October 2025.
Aviation Career and Military Leadership
Upon completing her undergraduate studies, Akoth proceeded to Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi for pilot training.
She completed the demanding program she officially became a commissioned pilot in the U.S. Air Force.
She later joined the Air Force Special Operations Command, where she gained extensive experience in high-risk operational environments.
Over several deployments, she accumulated more than 1,300 combat flight hours while leading intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Between 2018 and 2024, Akoth held several leadership positions, including:
- Unit Training Officer
- Aircraft Commander
- Flight Commander
- Deputy Commander
In these roles, she supervised aircrew training, coordinated flight operations, implemented safety programs, and also mentored junior officers.
Since October 2024, she has served as an Instructor Pilot and Assistant Director of Operations in Florida.
She currently trains over 100 aircrew members, manages flight scheduling, oversees flight safety systems, and ensures operational readiness for special operations missions.
Because of her fluency in Swahili, acquired in Kenya, she is a participant in the Language Enabled Airman Program, using her Swahili skills to support international cooperation and community engagement.
