In a statement on April 8, the Office of the Attorney General announced that members of the public can now access Public Trustee services online through the e‑Citizen portal.
“The Office of the Attorney General has today announced the roll-out of access to Public Trustee services in the Nairobi Office through the e-Citizen platform,” read part of the statement.
“This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing access to justice and improving service delivery through digital transformation.”
New System Allows Remote Access to Public Trustee Services
According to the Attorney General’s office, the new system offers a faster and more convenient way for people to access services without the need to physically visit the Public Trustee’s Nairobi offices.
The digital platform will also help reduce costs, especially for those living outside Nairobi who previously had to travel to access the services.
“Access to Public Trustee services through the platform will facilitate real-time access to information and reduce the cost of access to services by all persons, including those residing in remote areas, who can now conveniently access services without the need to travel to Nairobi,” stated the AG’s office.

The services now available online include the administration of the estates of deceased people, administration of trusts for minors, persons living with mental disabilities, and individuals unable to make decisions due to age, illness, or other reasons as determined by a court.
The platform will also handle the distribution of accident compensation paid to the Public Trustee by insurance companies.
The Attorney General’s office said the online system enables real‑time access to information, making it easier for applicants to track and manage their cases.
Role of Government Public Trustee Services
Public trustee services are government services that step in to manage a person’s property, money, or estate when no private individual is able or willing to do so.
This often happens when someone dies without leaving a will, when the appointed executor cannot act, or when beneficiaries are children or otherwise unable to make decisions for themselves.

In such cases, the public trustee is responsible for identifying the deceased’s assets, settling any debts, and ensuring the remaining property or funds are distributed to the rightful beneficiaries in accordance with the law.
The services also cover the management of property belonging to missing persons or individuals with mental disabilities, as well as the holding and administration of trust funds on behalf of beneficiaries.
Acting as a neutral and professional administrator, the public trustee helps prevent misuse of assets, reduces family conflicts, and ensures that vulnerable individuals are protected.
Public trustee services help families and beneficiaries access their rights while ensuring estates and trust property are handled fairly and transparently.
