President William Ruto has issued fresh directives to his Cabinet Secretaries with strict deadlines. While presiding over Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County on October 20, President Ruto ordered the construction of two new stadiums in the Ukambani region and the completion of a key road project in Kitui County.

The Head of State directed Sports CS Salim Mvurya to begin the construction of two stadiums similar to the Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, one in Wote, Makueni County, and another in Machakos County,  each costing approximately KSh 750 million, even though the Ithookwe project is still incomplete.

Ruto Orders Construction of Stadiums in Makueni and Machakos Counties

President Ruto instructed the Sports Ministry to complete the Ithookwe Stadium before launching the new stadium projects in Makueni and Machakos counties in 2026.

“We built this stadium as the Government of Kenya, spending KSh 750 million, but it’s still not complete. We will wait for about a month for it to be finalized. Once everything is done,  including the parking area, I’ll come back to officially open it.
This is not just for Ukambani; we’re doing similar projects across Kenya.

I have also directed the Ministry of Sports to build a stadium like this one in Machakos and another one in Wote, Makueni,” the President stated.

President Ruto emphasized that since Kenya is known globally for its sporting excellence, it is essential to expand sports infrastructure to support talent across all regions, including Makueni and Machakos.

“Kenya is recognized worldwide for its sporting achievements, and that’s why we must invest in stadiums and sports infrastructure,” he added.

At the same event, President Ruto instructed Transport CS Davis Chirchir to ensure the immediate resumption and completion of the Kibwezi–Mwingi Road, which had stalled midway.

“You asked us to build a road from Kibwezi all the way to Mwingi. Construction stopped at a place called Kwa Siku. I want to announce that we have secured funds to resume the project so that it reaches Migwani and Mbodoni and connects to the Garissa highway. I have told Davis Chirchir that I do not want any more excuses about this road,” Ruto declared.

Head of State Orders Completion of Enziu Bridge

The President also directed the Transport Ministry to complete the Enziu Bridge, which has been the site of several fatal accidents.

“We have lost many lives at the Enziu Bridge, as the governor mentioned. That bridge has become a symbol of tragedy. I want to tell the people of Ukambani that my minister is here, and I have ordered that before the rains start in February next year, that bridge must be completed,” Ruto ordered.

President Ruto further explained that several development projects in the Ukambani region had stalled due to the economic challenges his administration inherited. However, he assured residents that since the economy had now stabilized, his government would complete all pending projects.

He also criticized some local leaders for promoting what he termed as “politics of poverty,” accusing them of focusing on divisive politics instead of development, a situation he said has caused the region to lag behind economically.
