The Starehe Boys’ and Starehe Girls’ Centres have addressed concerns among the parents and guardians of Grade 10 2026 applicants seeking admission to the highly ranked national schools.
In a notice shared on Sunday, December 21, 2025, the school clarified the admission requirements after inquiries from parents and guardians of 2025 KJSEA candidates.
The school stated that it follows a set of criteria that is informed by the financial needs of students, school selection, performance, and regional balance.
According to the statement, admission to both centers is firmly grounded in the mandate to support children from needy backgrounds. Financial need remains the primary basis for admission. It is assessed through detailed information provided in the Yellow Form for the Boys’ Centre and the Blue Form for the Girls’ Centre, which all applicants are required to complete.
According to the center, their charters require that 70% of the students admitted to the Starehe Schools be from needy backgrounds, admitted on sponsorship determined by their assessed degree of need.
The Centres further explained that applicants must have selected Starehe as their preferred school in the appropriate category.

KJSEA examination performance is assessed vis-à-vis the selected pathway, meaning a learner’s results are evaluated in relation to the path they chose under the CBE. Emphasis is placed on performance in learning areas relevant to that pathway rather than on overall scores alone. This ensures that learners are admitted into pathways that align with their strengths and career choices.
In addition, the two centres explained that admissions are conducted based on regional balance, ensuring that qualifying candidates represent all counties of Kenya.
The Starehe Centers also stated that they are currently working closely with the Ministry of Education to obtain the necessary data for candidates who applied to join the schools. This data is required to complete the selection process in accordance with their admission criteria.

MoE Issues Guidelines for Change of Senior School after KJSEA Results
In a statement on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Julius Bitok, Basic Education Principal Secretary, announced that the Ministry has opened a one-week window for dissatisfied learners to review their selections.
The Ministry of Education also issued guidelines on how affected candidates can apply for a change of senior school placement, with applicants expected to liaise with their senior schools or the Ministry of Education Sub-County and County offices.
“To address these concerns, the Ministry will open a seven-day review of senior school choices starting Tuesday, December 23. Candidates are advised to contact their Grade 9 schools or the Ministry of Education Sub-County and County offices to take advantage of this window through their respective heads of institutions,” the statement read.
According to the Basic Education PS, the review will be guided by an automated system that matches preferences to learners’ performance and the availability of school slots. During the review period, incorrect gender entries will also be addressed.
