The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has warned schools against a fake message circulating on social media asking them to contribute money to support teacher recruitment and promotion interviews.

In a statement on September 8, the Commission said the message, which asks schools and individuals to make financial contributions, is false and should be disregarded.

The message claims that schools and individuals must contribute money toward the purchase of chairs and other support for recruitment and promotion interviews scheduled for September 2026.

TSC clarified that it does not charge teachers, schools or other individuals for services related to teacher recruitment and promotion.

The Commission said recruitment and promotion are among its core functions and are conducted transparently and accountably.

“The Commission wishes to clarify that no fees are levied for any services provided to teachers. Recruitment and promotion remain core functions of TSC and are conducted in a transparent and accountable manner. These services are fully funded by TSC,” stated TSC.

TSC further stated that it fully funds the exercises, with County Directors provided with adequate resources to facilitate the interviews.

“Good afternoon, colleagues. You are kindly requested to ask our members to contribute towards supporting the promotional and recruitment interviews as follows: KSh1,000 for schools with Js and KSh500 for those without Js. Members are requested to submit their contributions to the zonal chairpersons by Friday, September 11, 2026, to facilitate the smooth running of the exercise. Thank you in advance, and I wish you a blessed week and successful interviews for all candidates,” read the fake message.

TSC cautioned members of the public to be vigilant and avoid individuals seeking money in connection with recruitment and promotion exercises.

The Commission specifically warned heads of public basic education institutions against participating in or entertaining unauthorised financial requests linked to the interviews.

School heads have also been directed not to facilitate or support arrangements the collect money from teachers, schools, or other individuals.

TSC Opens 20,000 Junior School Teacher Positions

The warning comes as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) continues with teacher recruitment and promotion exercises across the country.

On July 28, 2026, TSC announced plans to recruit 20,000 teachers for Junior Schools as the government seeks to strengthen staffing under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

The Commission opened the application window on August 18, and candidates must submit their applications online by midnight on August 31. TSC said it would not accept manual applications.

The recruitment is taking place alongside the government’s plan to move thousands of teacher interns to permanent and pensionable (P&P) terms.

The 2026/27 national budget set aside KSh13.1 billion for the transition, including KSh4.9 billion to convert 20,000 intern teachers to permanent terms from January 2027.

Another KSh8.2 billion was allocated to convert 24,000 newly recruited interns to permanent terms from July 2027.

However, TSC did not state whether the 20,000 positions advertised in July are the same positions targeted for conversion in January 2027 or form part of a separate recruitment exercise.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said during the 2026/27 Budget Statement that converting the 44,000 interns would bring the total number of teachers employed by the government since 2022 to 116,000.
