People travelling from Nairobi to Burundi have several options, with the journey to Bujumbura available by air or road, depending on their budget, time, and preferred route.
Flights are much faster, while buses offer a cheaper alternative for travellers willing to spend more time on the road.
Bujumbura, Burundi’s main commercial city, is connected to Nairobi through direct and connecting flights, as well as long-distance road services.
Flight from Nairobi to Bujumbura
Travellers can fly from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) to Bujumbura International Airport (BJM).
Kenya Airways currently lists flights between the two cities, with selected economy-class return fares starting at about KSh90,010 for some September and October 2026 travel dates.
The airline has also listed selected return journeys from KSh89,900, including a trip departing Nairobi on September 25 and returning on October 2, 2026.
The fares are for return tickets and should not be interpreted as the standard one-way cost of flying from Nairobi to Burundi.
Airfare also varies depending on the travel date, availability and booking period.

According to Rome2Rio, a direct flight between Nairobi and Bujumbura takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes, while the air distance between the two cities is about 883 kilometres.
The short flight time makes air travel the quickest option for people who need to reach Burundi within the shortest possible time.
Travellers can also fly with RwandAir, although its Nairobi-Bujumbura itinerary involves a connection in Kigali, Rwanda.
Rome2Rio estimates the flight time on the RwandAir option at approximately three hours and 15 minutes, excluding the time spent during the connection.
The route gives travellers another option to compare airlines, schedules, and fares when planning their journey from Nairobi to Bujumbura.
Bus Travel from Nairobi to Burundi
Road travel is considerably cheaper than flying but takes substantially longer.
Rome2Rio currently lists a bus journey from Nairobi to Bujumbura at about US$64 to US$66, which is about KSh8,200.
The journey is estimated to take about 29 hours.
However, the actual travel time can vary because international bus journeys are affected by traffic, scheduled stops, border clearance and road conditions.

Rome2Rio also lists another road option through Kigali, with the journey taking approximately 26 hours and 31 minutes and costing between KSh7,800 and KSh12,900.
Nairobi-Kigali-Bujumbura Route
One of the overland options involves travelling from Nairobi to Nyabugogo Bus Park in Kigali, before continuing to Bujumbura.
Rome2Rio lists Trinity Express among the operators serving the Nairobi-Kigali section, with the journey estimated at about 21 hours, and the bus fare from Nairobi to Bujumbura is 7500.
Travellers then connect to another bus for the Kigali-Bujumbura section.
This means passengers should check whether a ticket covers the entire Nairobi-Bujumbura journey or only one section of the route before making a booking.
Road Distance Between Nairobi and Bujumbura
The road distance between Nairobi and Bujumbura is approximately 1,156 kilometres, according to Rome2Rio.
For someone driving directly, Rome2Rio estimates the journey at approximately 21 hours and 24 minutes.
A bus passenger, however, can expect the journey to take longer because of stops, traffic and border formalities.
The route through Kigali is one of the options available to travellers, although the exact route used by a particular bus service depends on the operator and current border arrangements.
Travellers using road transport should confirm their route, connection points and border requirements with the operator before departure.
