Kenyan activist Hanifa Adan has refuted media reports claiming she narrowly escaped an abduction attempt in Nairobi over the weekend, accusing a local outlet of sensationalizing her experience.
“Kenyan media have used my name for clout for the longest time. It’s sad,” Hanifa posted on social media on July 27. “When did I say it was an abduction attempt?”
Her statement comes in response to an article published by a local news outlet alleging she was the target of an attempted kidnapping on Saturday night.
Adan clarified that while the incident was frightening, she did not label it an abduction attempt.
What Happened to Hanifa
“I alighted from a bus, and this guy I’d been seated next to kept insisting on taking me home,” she wrote in a detailed post. “He said his brother was nearby with a car, and I should go with them. I told him I’d already ordered an Uber, but he wouldn’t let it go.”

She said the situation escalated when the man returned with another individual, allegedly his brother and both pressured her to enter their vehicle.
“That’s when I started getting really scared. I asked them straight up why I would go with two grown men I don’t know, at night? Why are you insisting so hard?” Adan recalled.
Although she eventually got away safely, Hanifa stated that the media’s characterization of the event as an “abduction attempt” was misleading and not based on her own words.

He was dropped off around 3 am and walked to Diani, where he managed to reach out to his family.
“Mwabili was dropped in a bush in Kinondo, Kwale county, around 3 am where he walked for about 3kms to Diani. While in Diani, he managed to call his family, who alerted us, and we sent our officers immediately,” Khalid said.
Khalid alleged that the police wanted to arrest Mwagodi after he presented himself at a police station in Diani.
He stated that officers from Vocal Africa and MUHURI were forced to intervene before Mwagodi was released.
Mwagodi’s family confirmed that he is currently admitted to a hospital in Mombasa for a check-up.
Khalid said the Activist will then board a flight to Nairobi to meet his family.
