While the Vatican walls offer a shield of protection while he resides in the Holy City, the greatest risk for the pope lies in his movements.
The Popemobile, often open-roofed, is designed for visibility but creates vulnerability.
To ensure he is top protected from any danger, every move is tracked by satellite, drone, and an elite ground detail. Popes’ road convoys are mapped in decoy routes in one of the modest security protection techniques only used by the US Secret Service. The men you see in suits and ties protecting the pope especially on trips outside of Rome come from a variety of security forces.
Top of pope’s security detail is the storied 500-year-old Swiss Guard, a military unit that clad in colorful uniforms when they guard the entrances to the Vatican, behind those colorful ancient uniforms lie modern weapons, special ops training, and an Intelligence equipped Protection unit. The Swiss guard is the first layer of protection for the pope. They are trained in hand-to-hand combat, counterterrorism, and rapid evacuation.
The additional pope’s security detail comes from The Gendarmerie Corps. The Vatican’s police force, handling intelligence, cyber threats, surveillance, and crowd control. The Gendarmerie Corps is responsible for public order, security and judicial police functions in Vatican City State.

Further Italian security services are at the center of pope’s protection 24/7 while providing external perimeter protection, snipers, and transport escorts.
