Nyandarua Senator John Methu has opened up about an alleged political offer that would have led him to leave former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp, establish his own political party, and position himself for a possible running mate slot in President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
Methu made the revelation while explaining his relationship with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and the politics ahead of the next General Election during an interview with Citizen TV on October 12.
The senator explained the approach came shortly after the July 16, 2026, Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
In Olkalou, the candidate backed by Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) defeated the government-backed contender.
According to Methu, a friend working in government invited him for coffee, and during the meeting, the individual encouraged him to establish his own political party.
Methu’s friend argued that John had gained prominence following the Ol Kalou by-election and could build a stronger political profile across the Mount Kenya region.
“We want to get you a party. So that you can have your own vehicle, and so that you can also get a way of participating as a principal in the United Opposition,” John Methu stated.
Methu further said the proposed arrangement would let him participate in the United Opposition as a principal alongside Gachagua.
The senator also described financial incentives he said were part of the proposed political arrangement.

John Methu Explains Alleged Political Approach
According to Methu, the individual who approached him argued that Gachagua could struggle to contest the presidency because of a court case.
Under the proposed arrangement, according to Methu was expected to receive 10 million weekly to push the party after registration.
In addition, the senator would be receiving donations and people to campaign for his registered party.
However, for the pilot project to work, Methu was supposed to work as an opposition member with the government party, ensuring that Methu’s political profile grows.
Methu further explained that during the 2027 election, the government would grant him the opportunity to be Ruto’s running mate.
“And we will raise your profile and help you because it is a pilot. If it works, we can converge at the tail end. You can become William Ruto’s running mate,” Methu explained the political terms of the deal.
However, John Methu declined the offer, emphasizing that he had no political ambition to be Ruto’s running mate.
He further reaffirmed that his only priority in 2027 was defending his Nyandarua Senate seat, citing that he was only 35 years old.
Methu Raises Questions About Ndindi Nyoro’s Political Position
After the political deal was offered to the senator, he approached Ndindi Nyoro, whom he described as a friend and a politician he admired, while pursuing elective office.
Methu noted that during the interaction, Ndindi Nyoro warned that the government-linked offer was meant to divide the opposition.
Nyoro further argued that Ruto would use the divide-and-rule strategy to ensure the opposition party had no presidential candidate or voter support, according to John Methu.
However, later, the Kiharu MP told Methu he had his own party, prompting Methu to question his loyalty to the United Opposition.
“When I heard him say he has a party, I couldn’t believe my ears because it is he who told me that another party is a creation of William Ruto,” Methu said.
Methu also questioned the political position of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party leader, because of his friendship with Nyoro, stating that their loyalties could be divided.
