People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has revealed details of a phone call she had with ODM leader Raila Odinga following the Saba Saba protests.
Speaking during a media interview on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Karua dismissed claims that it was the former Prime Minister who first contacted her, insisting that she was the one who initiated the call.
“I want to clarify that I was the one who called him at the beginning of July to deliver a personal message from a mutual contact. I later followed up with another call—not about the mutual contact this time, but regarding what was happening after the Saba Saba protests. I called him on either the 8th or 9th,” Karua said.
Karua Urges Raila to Withdraw Support for Ruto’s Government
According to Karua, during their phone conversation, she questioned Raila Odinga’s conscience in working with a government that, in her words, continues to engage in extrajudicial killings.
Karua further urged the ODM leader to reconsider his support for the Kenya Kwanza government.
“I told him I didn’t want to have a discussion. I just wanted to leave it with him—Isn’t it time for him to reconsider his support for the KK regime? Isn’t it time for him to withdraw?” Karua added.
She reminded the former Prime Minister that without his support, President William Ruto’s regime would crumble, and even Parliament could potentially sanction him. She said she left that thought with him.
Karua also revealed that during their phone conversation, Raila proposed a face-to-face meeting to discuss the “national conclave” he had proposed during a press conference held around the time of the Saba Saba protests.
“I have not discussed the conclave with him. He did suggest that we meet in person, but I told him I was heading to the US,” Karua stated.

The PLP leader stressed that she is not in favor of a dialogue process, arguing that President Ruto would use it as a way to pacify the public while delivering no tangible outcomes.
“Dialogue will only serve as a pacifier—something to calm the people temporarily—when, in reality, they will get nothing and eventually be hit harder,” she said.
Raila Claims He Spoke with Opposition Leaders Regarding Dialogue
Karua’s remarks come days after the former Prime Minister, in a media interview held on Sunday, July 20 2025, stated that he had shared his proposal for a national conclave with several leaders, including Martha Karua, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

“I also mentioned the conclave idea to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka. I talk to Kalonzo every day—even yesterday I talked to him about it, and he has what we call a wait-and-see attitude. I talk to Martha (Karua) all the time. I talk to all of them,” Raila claimed.
Raila’s proposal for a national conclave came in the wake of widespread youth-led protests. In a press conference at Serena Hotel on July 7, 2025, he emphasized the need for open discussions to tackle youth unemployment, corruption, and impunity.
