National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah has revealed that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua physically assaulted Dennis Itumbi, the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, during a past meeting.

In an interview on Tuesday, September 17, Ichungw’ah suggested that Gachagua’s behavior has changed since assuming office as Deputy President in 2022.

The Kikuyu MP recounted an incident where Gachagua allegedly grabbed Itumbi by the shirt collar during an event at a State Lodge, threatening him in the presence of other leaders.

“When some people attain power and access to state resources, their true nature comes to light. I don’t know how else to describe a person holding high office, who walks into a meeting at a State Lodge and grabs the collar of a junior officer, in this case, Dennis Itumbi, threatening him with physical assault on the basis that someone who had no defined role until recently think he would say his work is ‘come here and go there’,” Ichungw’ah stated.

Ichungw’ah explained that the Deputy President is not tweeting the things that the media and others want him to say.

He accused Gachagua of belittling Kiambaa MP Wanjiku John Njuguna by publicly discussing the dowry and the time he spent at his wedding.

“If you hold a high office, why would you be so petty and vindictive toward leaders simply because they are not kneeling before you and praising you as the greatest of all?” he said.

Further, Ichungw’ah mentioned that the Deputy President had insulted Baringo Women Representative Florence Jematia due to her association with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

Why DP Insults Other Politicians

He emphasized that Gachagua insults those who refuse to align with him and associate with politicians he disapproves of.

“I can tell you that MPs, especially those from the Mt. Kenya region, have harrowing stories of what they have had to endure. Many of them shudder in fear because of his desperation and attempts to intimidate them,’ he said.

Ichungw’ah said the Deputy President is desperate to unite politicians from the Mt. Kenya region and use that as a shield to mask his true character and blackmail President William Ruto and his government.

Gachagua Characters & Techniques

He stated that concerns about Gachagua’s character were raised even before his selection as running mate in May 2022.

Additionally, he revealed that differences began toward the end of 2023 when it was discovered that a significant amount of money had been wasted in one of the offices.

Ichungw’ah criticized the Deputy President for trying to use the “one man, one vote, one shilling” formula to win people over and position himself as the champion of the people, even though he has the power to implement the revenue distribution formula.
