Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained the reason why he skipped a function in Nyeri County which was graced by President William Ruto.
While addressing a congregation at Baricho Catholic Parish on September 15, Kirinyaga County, Gachagua said he was supposed to attend a function in Nyeri but having learned that there was a special occasion in Kirinyaga, he changed his mind.
“As I was heading to a church service in Nyeri, I heard that there would be some celebration here and I also heard that there would also be a cake, “ Gachagua said jokingly. He added that the event went on for quite some time and he couldn’t make it to attend Ruto’s event.
The second in command was reportedly supposed to attend a church service in the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (A.I.P.C.A) Central – at Nyeri County alongside President William Ruto but he did not make it to the event.
Gachagua Responds to Accusations of Premature Campaigns
Gachagua was accompanied by various political leaders from his Mount Kenya backyard during the service.
They included Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru, Kirinyaga Senator, Kamau Murango, Kirinyaga Women Representative Njeri Maina, Kiambu Senator, Karungo Thangwa and Embakasi North MP, James Gakuyu.
Gachagua was also accompanied by several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and Kirinyaga Speaker Murimi Muteti among other leaders.
The second in command responded to those leaders who have been accusing him of kickstarting early campaigns urging them to focus on their roles.

“It’s time for work, as far as I know, elections are over. All the leaders including me, the President, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament, and all the leaders should focus on their work.”
“When the right time comes we will go back to the electorate and they will decide who to elect, ”Gachagua said.
Gachagua’s remarks come days after a section of Mount Kenya leaders recently endorsed Cabinet Secretary for Interior Professor Kithure Kindiki as the Mount Kenya Kingpin.
Mount Kenya MPs Endorse Kindiki Amid Rift with Gachagua
The 48 Mps led by Lari MP, Joseph Mburu unanimously agreed to appoint Kindiki as their regional leader after they held a meeting at Nyahururu on September 12.
The leaders endorsed Kindiki to act as their link to the Executive arguing that with Kindiki as their leader for the region, they will reap more benefits from the Government especially when it comes to development matters.

Earlier this week a section of leaders from Mount Kenya East region led by Mbeere North Mp, Geoffrey Ruku also endorsed the Interior CS as the Kingpin.
