Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), led by President Samia Suluhu, has expelled former Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi from the party, just one day after he announced his resignation from the position.
CCM Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro announced the decision on August 26, 2026, following meetings of the party’s Central Committee and National Executive Committee.
Migiro said the party had considered a disciplinary and ethics matter involving Nchimbi and determined that his conduct violated the CCM Constitution, rules and regulations.
“The National Executive Committee of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) unanimously passed a resolution that, due to conduct that violated the party’s rules concerning discipline and ethics, Nchimbi should be expelled from membership in accordance with the party’s regulations.”
Samia nominates Ndejembi as Tanzania’s Vice President
The CCM National Executive Council has unanimously approved Deogratius John Ndejembi as the party’s nominee for Tanzania’s Vice President, according to CCM Secretary General Dr Asha Rose Migiro.
Migiro said the approval was made at the initial party stage, with Ndejembi’s nomination subject to the constitutional procedures required for him to assume the position.
She said Ndejembi’s name will be presented to Parliament for approval before the process can proceed. Once Parliament approves the nomination, the swearing-in process will begin.
“The National Executive Council unanimously approved our party member to take up the position of Vice President. This will take place after the constitutional procedures have been completed, which require his name to be presented to Parliament and approved there,” she said.

Ndejembi’s nomination follows the resignation of Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who announced that he would retire from public service and become inactive.
Why Nchimbi Resigned
Emmanuel Nchimbi announced his resignation from the vice presidency on August 25, 2026, saying he had formally submitted his resignation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
He also announced his retirement from public service and active politics, effective September 4, 2026.
Nchimbi said his decision stemmed from a commitment he made to President Samia before taking office. He had pledged to serve her and the country faithfully and step aside if she felt the need for a different vice president.
“I have become convinced, without doubt, that Her Excellency the President wants change, so I have decided to fulfill my promise,” Nchimbi said.

He said he would leave office in accordance with Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Nchimbi’s resignation comes 295 days after he was sworn in as Vice President on November 3, 2025, at Chamwino State House in Dodoma.
He assumed the position after President Hassan won the October 29, 2025, General Election, in which Nchimbi served as her running mate.
Before becoming Vice President, Nchimbi served as secretary-general of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). He thanked President Samia Suluhu and the party for the confidence placed in him during his time in office.
