The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new login option on the iTax platform to allow Kenyan taxpayers to access services using their National Identity Card (ID) numbers.
The move comes in response to increasing public complaints over difficulties accessing iTax during return deadlines.
According to KRA, Kenyans lamented about forgetting or misplacing Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
Earlier, users could only log into iTax using their KRA PINs, a requirement that many found difficult, especially during the peak tax filing period.
We are simplifying tax processes, enhancing user experience, and promoting a more customer-centric approach to tax administration.
This move is part of an ongoing campaign by the Authority to simplify tax processes, enhance user experience, and promote a more customer-centric approach to tax administration.

KRA on Whether the PIN Will Still Be in Use
At the same time, the authority has indicated that the PIN method remains active.
However, the addition of ID-based login is an alternative that many taxpayers are expected to find more convenient during the high-traffic return filing season.
“The decision to implement this option was driven by feedback from taxpayers who noted that ID numbers are easier to remember and more frequently used in everyday identification processes.”
“By offering an option that aligns with users’ preferences and habits, KRA hopes to reduce friction in accessing services and promote greater uptake of digital tax services,” the statement added.

iTax Functions Remain the Same
Despite the change in access method, all main iTax functionalities will remain available to users.
- The services include
- Filing tax returns
- Making payments
- Applying for Tax Compliance Certificates
- Accessing notices and communication from KRA.
“This development comes as part of broader reforms aimed at modernizing tax administration and building a tax system that puts the taxpayer at the centre.”
“The Authority has been working to streamline its systems, simplify procedures, and leverage technology to make tax processes more accessible,” noted the statement.
To use the new login option, individual taxpayers need a valid Kenyan ID and a registered mobile number linked to their iTax profile.
The platform will validate the ID details before granting access.
