Equity Bank has announced the temporary closure of select branches across the country in honour of the late former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga.
The announced closure, which is set to affect both national and regional operations, will particularly impact Kisumu City.
Equity Bank Honours the Late Former Prime Minister
According to an initial notice issued by the Equity Bank, all branches were scheduled to close on Friday, 17th October 2025, to pay tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH.
“All our branches will be closed on Friday, 17th October in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH, and will resume operations on Saturday, 18th October,” read part of the Equity Bank statement.
However, in an updated communication, the bank specified that its Kisumu City branches would remain closed for an additional day to mark continued respect for the deceased leader.
The affected branches include:
- Kisumu Main (Oginga Odinga Street)
- Kisumu Angawa (Angawa Street)
- Kisumu Supreme (Milimani, Okore Road)
“Our branches in Kisumu City will remain closed on Saturday, 18th October 2025, in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH,” the bank added.
Digital and Alternative Banking Channels
Equity Bank has reassured customers that its digital and alternative channels will remain operational throughout the closure period.
The bank urged customers to continue accessing services via its 24-hour platforms, including:

- ATMs and Equity Cards
- Equitel
- Online Banking: Equity Online & Eazzybiz
- Equity Agents

The bank reiterated its commitment to service continuity, noting that these platforms ensure customers can perform transactions seamlessly even when physical branches are closed.
“Our digital and alternative channels remain available 24/7,” the notice emphasised.
Resumption of Services
Normal operations across all Equity Bank branches will resume on Tuesday, 21st October 2025.
The bank thanked customers for their understanding and cooperation during the brief closure, assuring them of uninterrupted access to financial services through its digital ecosystem.
Govt Declares Raila Odinga Holiday
The government declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honor of the late Raila Amolo Odinga, the veteran opposition leader and former Prime Minister who passed away on October 15, 2025.

In a gazette notice issued on October 16, the Ministry of Interior announced that the day would be set aside for national reflection and remembrance of Odinga’s legacy and immense contribution to Kenya’s democracy.
The declaration, made under the Public Holidays Act, aims to allow the nation to reflect on Odinga’s legacy. The holiday will be observed nationwide.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, the 17th of October 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.”
Odinga collapsed during a morning walk and was taken to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead.
