Across Kenya, many public hospitals are managing increasing patient demand while also caring for individuals who have fully recovered but are unable to leave due to outstanding medical bills.
This situation places strain on both patients and healthcare facilities, with patients experiencing prolonged stays after recovery and hospitals facing reduced bed availability for those in need of urgent care.
In response, Bandabets, in partnership with HealthX, has launched Beyond the Bill, a social impact initiative designed to support both patients and healthcare systems by restoring freedom, easing hospital congestion, and enabling continued access to care.
The initiative works with public hospitals to identify patients who have been medically cleared for discharge but remain in the hospital due to unpaid bills.
Once verified, Bandabets settles these bills directly with the hospital, enabling timely discharge and freeing up capacity within healthcare facilities.
Importantly, Beyond the Bill goes beyond immediate intervention.
Strengthening Healthcare Access Through Digital Solutions and Strategic Partnerships
Recognizing that many affected individuals lack access to ongoing healthcare, the initiative ensures continuity of care by enrolling beneficiaries into the Social Health Authority (SHA) and providing access to digital healthcare services through HealthX.

“Beyond the Bill is built on a simple but urgent truth restoring dignity and rebuilding lives,” said Isaac Odhiambo, Impact and Sustainability Program Coordinator at Bandabets.
“This initiative is about removing immediate barriers while also ensuring that individuals leave hospital with the support they need to stay healthy moving forward.”
HealthX plays a central role in delivering the healthcare access component of the program.
The initiative is currently being piloted in select counties, with plans to scale through partnerships with hospitals, private sector organizations, and community stakeholders.
Beyond the Bill reflects Bandabets’ broader commitment to community-driven impact, creating solutions that address real challenges while restoring dignity and opportunity.
Additional human-interest stories featuring individual beneficiaries will be released in the coming weeks.
