On Saturday, July 5, 2025, Beatrice Chebet raised the Kenyan flag high at the Prefontaine Classic held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, by breaking the women’s 5000m world record.
She became the first woman in history to run the distance in under 14 minutes, clocking 13:58.06 and surpassing the previous record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the same venue in September 2023.
Chebet, a double Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10,000m from the 2024 Paris Olympics, delivered a good performance, with a 61-second final lap, pulling away from Tsegay and Kenya’s Agnes Jebet Ngetich, who finished second in 14:01.29.

Her first major international breakthrough came in 2018 when she won the 5000m gold medal at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, with a time of 15:30.77. This victory made her the first Kenyan woman to win the 5000m title at the World U20 Championships since 2006.
