Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League 2024/25 champions Kenya Police FC are set to host Mogadishu City Club from Somalia in a highly anticipated CAF Champions League first preliminary round second-leg match.
Kenya Police FC head into the return leg, scheduled for Sunday, September 28, at the Nyayo National Stadium, with a commanding 3-1 aggregate lead after dominating the first leg—also played at the same venue due to Mogadishu City Club’s lack of a proper home ground.
The FKF Premier League champions secured the first-leg victory through goals from Eric Zakayo, Edward Omondi, and David Simiyu, giving them a crucial advantage heading into the decisive encounter.
However, the on-pitch success was marred by viral videos showing a section of Mogadishu City fans desecrating the Kenyan flag—an act that has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the country.

Backlash over flag desecration
As attention turns to both the pitch and the terraces, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered the arrest, prosecution, and deportation of the culprits involved in the flag desecration.

In the viral video, two Mogadishu City fans are seen mocking the Kenyan flag—one kicks it into the air while the other grabs it mid-air and rubs it against his crotch, laughing.
A second, seemingly choreographed video shows another fan, wearing a traditional Somali sarong, snatch a flag from a Kenya Police FC supporter before casually throwing it to the ground.
The footage prompted instant backlash from Kenyans both at the stadium and online, with many calling it a “blatant act of disrespect.”
Government response
While speaking at the Jukwaa la Usalama Forum in Wajir on Wednesday, CS Murkomen called for action to be taken against the culprits.
“Hatutakubali mtu yeyote, iwe Mkenya ama mgeni, kucheza na uhuru wetu and our symbols of national unity, including our national flag. So, Bwana IG (Douglas Kanja), take the necessary legal action. Let the law take its course. As a Ministry of Interior, we must show the world that we take our national flag seriously,” he said.
CS Murkomen also warned that Kenya will not tolerate disrespect from neighboring citizens, emphasizing the country’s firm stance on protecting national symbols.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also responded firmly saying, “I have already directed the DCI, ya kwamba huyo mtu anakanyaga bendera yetu ya Kenya…bendera ile ilipiganiwa hapa mpaka tukapata uhuru wetu…hiyo anatuchezea na hatuwezi kubali kamwe,” said IG Kanja.
“The DCI is under direct instructions from the IG that he must move with speed with efficiency to ensure that that man is arrested and taken before a court of law. Bendera yetu lazima iheshimiwe.”
According to Kenyan law, “A person who shows disrespect—in speech, manner, or writing—to the flag shall be guilty of an offense and liable to a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months.”
Somalia’s official response
Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, on Wednesday also strongly condemned the acts, calling them “regrettable.” He added that Somali authorities are investigating the matter for possible action.
“Let me state clearly: we regret and firmly condemn the actions of a few individuals whose behavior has overshadowed the remarkable performances of both teams,” Abdulle said.
Mogadishu City Club had earlier issued a public apology, denouncing the actions of their fans.
