Kenyans online on Monday, June 17 took to social media platform X spamming the official accounts of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and its Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva with protest posters.
This coordinated online protest was spearheaded by an X user who rallied a section of Kenyans to target Georgieva’s account and IMF official accounts with warning posters aimed at pressuring the organization to stop loaning money to Kenya.
The user claimed the fund received from IMF have led to punitive taxes and pressure on Kenyan MPs to Finance Bill 2024.
“Shame the government on the international stage. Every post they make, we reply with these posters. They must leave us,” reads the tweet.

As a result, several Kenyans shared a poster with President William Ruto’s image with the encryption stating:
“This is to notify the world at large that the person whose photograph and names appear above is not authorized to act or transact on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Kenya, and the nation and our future generations shall not be held liable for any penalties of bad loans negotiated and/or borrowed by him.”
While sharing the poster, users voiced their frustrations, blaming the IMF for the Kenya’s problems, expressing their readiness to rebuild the nation without external interference.

Social Media Flooded with Ruto’s Posters
According to some of the netizens, IMF is responsible for impoverishing the country by giving loans.
“Leave us alone and let us deal with politicians like William Ruto. You are not our friends. Politicians steal all these funds. Kenyan government is full of thieves and corrupt leaders,” stated an X user Fela Kuti.
One user Baba Lucky criticized the World Bank and IMF, asserting, “They are not serious people. They support consumption. The IMF gives money to support imports, which creates debt for my people, not imports of capital goods but imports of perfumes, wigs, and alcohol.”
Another user emphasized the sentiment, “Leave us alone, leave our money. You cannot hold the government at ransom at the expense of its citizens. If you cannot lend to the government without such tough, inhumane conditions, keep your money.”
Subsequently, others warned the IMF to stop their shenanigans and to cease misleading the president.

Kenyans Criticize IMF Decries High Taxes
“Dear IMF fraternity, Warm greetings from Nairobi. Although there’s nothing warm as far as IMF is concerned here in Kenya, we’re sending a polite message to you on behalf of Kenyans,” stated a user named Sani12.
Zhannie urged IMF to keep their self-righteous syndrome out of African nations adding that they keep lending governments.
Additionally, Irini Ernest criticized the practice of pumping money into various places without adequate follow-up and not disclosing to Kenyans when and at what rates they will repay.
“We’re a poor nation as long as you give us loans based on raw data and statistics. It’s doing more harm than good to us,” he said.
