Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced the suspension of his country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In an announcement through the official Press TV and Mehr news agency on July 2, 2025, Masoud approved a law requiring the government to suspend its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, IAEA.
In June, Iranian lawmakers introduced a bill titled “Suspension of the Islamic Republic’s Cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency with a Two-Urgency Requirement,” which has since gained formal approval.
“Given the violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Zionist regime and the United States of America concerning the country’s peaceful nuclear facilities and the endangerment of Iran’s supreme interests, based on Article 60 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on Treaties, the government is obligated to immediately suspend any cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency based on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its safeguards, until certain conditions are met, including ensuring the security of the facilities and scientists,” read part of the bill.
Iranian President Confirms Suspension of IAEA Cooperation
The move follows escalating tensions between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog over access to monitoring and transparency, amid heightened military confrontations involving Israel and the United States.
A 12-day conflict broke out on June 13 after Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities. In response, Tehran carried out retaliatory missile and drone attacks, while the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites during the exchange.
This comes after Iran recently kicked out American GPS system from its borders and adopted the Chinese built Beidou.

Iran Breaks Rules
For the first time in 20 years, the global nuclear watchdog has found that Iran has failed to meet its obligations, even as the Trump administration continues talks with the country.
On May 12, 2025, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a resolution warning of a possible referral to the UN Security Council over Iran’s non-compliance.
“Iran’s many failures to uphold its obligations since 2019 to provide the Agency with full and timely cooperation regarding undeclared nuclear material and activities at multiple undeclared locations in Iran constitute non-compliance with its obligations under its Safeguards Agreement,” the draft resolution said.

UN Watchdog Says Iran Failed in Nuclear Obligations
The move comes after an earlier report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which raised concerns about undisclosed nuclear materials and suspected secret activities at sites that have been under investigation for years.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has no choice but to respond to this political resolution,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organisation said.
Under its safeguard obligations, Iran is legally required to declare all nuclear materials and activities and to grant IAEA inspectors access to verify that none are being diverted from peaceful purposes.
