Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delivered an advanced Surface-to-air Python and Derby (SPYDER) Air Defense System to President William Ruto to boost Kenya’s airspace security.
SPYDER Air Defense System is manufactured by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
This defensive system is primarily developed to counter-drone technology, detecting, tracking, and destroying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using specialized missiles and integrated radar systems.
In a post shared by Rashid Abdi on 13th December 2025 via X, the cargo was delivered by an Air Cargo Boeing 767-3Q8 freighter used by the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

Kenya Purchasing SPYDER Air Defense from Israel
In May 2025, Kenya was set to receive a Sh3.4 billion loan from Israel to finance the acquisition of a modern missile defense system, according to budget documents tabled in Parliament.
The loan was expected to be wired to the Ministry of Defense for the procurement of the military equipment.
In 2024, Kenya was also set to acquire advanced air missile defense systems from Israel for Sh1 billion on loan from Tel Aviv, to be delivered by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
Kenya has long faced threats from Al-Shabaab, and security experts urged the government to invest more in modern surveillance and defense systems to combat attacks in the country.
Last year, the Ministry of Defense requested an additional Sh3 billion from the Exchequer to facilitate the purchase of the Spyder system, indicating the government’s commitment in dealing with security matters.
The system, developed to protect against aerial threats, is part of a broader strategy to equip the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) with modern tools to secure the country’s borders and contribute effectively to regional peace efforts.
Kenya has increased its military spending in the past years, with data showing that expenditure on defense equipment has risen from Ksh147.37 billion in 2023 to Ksh166.8 billion in 2024.

Spyder Air Defence System
Spyder is one of the systems developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
It is a quick-reaction, low-level surface-to-air missile system designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and precision-guided munitions.
Operational for over 15 years, with proven success, Spyder is the choice of eight of the world’s most sophisticated armed forces, including the Czech Republic, the first NATO member to deploy Spyder systems.
The Spyder Family of short- to long-range mobile, quick-reaction, combat-proven Air Defense Systems rapidly neutralizes aircraft, UAVs, and precision guided munitions.
It is now enhanced with a sophisticated counter-TBM (tactical ballistic missile) capability.
Flexible, customizable, and transportable by aircraft, the New Generation Spyder, based on Open Architecture, integrates advanced new sensors, effectors, and launcher configurations that can be flexibly combined.
