Péter Magyar said Monday he will not call U.S. President Donald Trump but that his government will be available if Trump or anyone from the U.S. administration reaches out.

The statement came one day after Magyar’s party secured a landslide victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, ending Viktor Orbán’s 14-year rule.

Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Elections

Péter Magyar’s party won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026. The results ended Viktor Orbán’s rule that had lasted more than a decade. Magyar held a press conference the next day, April 13, at the HUNGEXPO Congress and Exhibition Center in Budapest.

The event lasted more than two and a half hours. Reporters asked questions on domestic reforms, relations with the European Union, and foreign policy. Magyar answered each topic directly.

The victory followed a campaign in which Orbán received public support from the Trump administration. JD Vance appeared in person at an Orbán campaign event.

Despite that support, Magyar’s party secured a clear majority in parliament. The press conference was the first major public appearance by the new leadership after the election results became final.

Magyar Answers Foreign Policy Questions

Magyar spoke about Hungary’s relations with the United States during the question-and-answer part of the press conference. He described the United States as a very important partner.

“The US is a very important partner with which Hungary needs good relations and should maintain good relations,” he said, according to The Guardian’s live election blog.

He took the same position toward Russia. He said he would not call Russian President Vladimir Putin first but would take the call if Putin or his administration reached out. He also said Hungary should review Russian energy contracts and push for an end to the war in Ukraine.

The answers came after reporters asked about possible contact with the incoming Trump administration. News.am reported the same details within hours of the event.

Magyar gave his direct answer on contact with the Trump administration when asked at the press conference. He said: “I will not call Trump. But if he, or anyone from the U.S. administration, reaches out to us, we will be available.”

This position differs from the approach taken by the previous government under Orbán, which had close and public ties to Trump. The Trump administration had backed Orbán 

Magyar has called for stronger alignment with the European Union and NATO while keeping practical working relations with Washington and Moscow. The remarks were made less than 24 hours after the election results and set the public tone for how the new leadership will handle ties with the United States.
